What are Pre-Workout Supplements?
Pre-workout supplements are a somewhat newer category of products designed to increase workout intensity and energy as well as enhance the pump and improve in-training strength levels. I myself prefer a stimulant free product because most of the time I train late and need to be able to fall asleep. On the other hand, if I’m training in the morning, I’ll use a stimulant based product.
Creatine free products are for those who, for whatever reason, do not want to use creatine. One reason may be the fact that many college sport programs have banned creatine. This line of thinking ties into the idea that Congress views creatine as a “steroid”. This is too bad as creatine is one of, if the, most effective natural products on the market today and in fact, can be considered a pioneer of the cell expansion or pump aspect of these products as well as a pioneer of one of the main current muscle growth theories, sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. This is a term I have referenced a lot in these guides, it should be noted that it is just one theory, certainly not the main one and it should also be noted that each theory ties somewhat into the other. Pre-Workout Supplements, Timing and Dosage
Pre-workout supplements usually come in powder versions, some products are available in tablet or capsules form. Timing is always about 30-45 minutes prior to training, only on training days, these are not used on off-days. The dosage requirements are typically, because of the high amount of caffeine, starting off with a small serving to assess your tolerance and you increase from there as need be to the maximum dose. Depending on how much you train, you may find yourself adjusting to the caffeine content in which case you should take a few days or even weeks off from using the product.
